WORD WORK OPTIONS
There are 2 components to our word work: word sorts(Words Their Way) and sight word work. Every week, your child will take home a SPELLING WORD SORT. This will be the same word sort they will be working on at school throughout the week. Your child will also be working on WORD WALL PRACTICE per week (attached please find the list for the entire year). These are words that are commonly used and may or may not be challenging for your child to read and write correctly.
Your child will be tested on their words from the word sorts every Friday, but NOT on the high frequency words. The weekly assessment lets me know how your child is managing the spelling pattern – I AM NOT LOOKING FOR CORRECT SPELLING.
WORD SORT (Words Their Way SPELLING) HOMEWORK ROUTINE:
Your child will bring their weekly word sort home on Monday. You should follow the word/picture sort routine as follows:
1. Cut out the words. Do a practice sort. Ask your child how they would sort these words/pictures. Sort them with the underlined words as the headers.
2. Buddy sort. Lay out the headers. Read the words/pictures to your child without them looking at the word. Have them point to the column where the word/picture would be placed. Let them place the word/picture. Then switch. Let your child read the words/pictures to you and you point to the appropriate column.
3. train game. Place the words/pictures face down one next to each other, like a train track. Take turns rolling a die (you can use pennies or beans as pawns) and moving across the train track. Turn over the card you land on and say and spell the word. First one to the end wins. Repeat
4. Practice test. On a piece of paper, make the appropriate number of columns (however many headers there are) Write the header words at the top of the columns. Then read the words/pictures without showing them to your child and have them write the word in the appropriate column – REMEMBER WE ARE LOOKING FOR THE CORRECT USE OF THE SPELLING PATTERN, NOT CORRECT SPELLING.
*Keep your words in a plastic bag. If you find that the words are too small, feel free to make your own cards on index cards WORD
WORD WALL PRACTICE (words listed by week below)
We perform activities all week with the high frequency words. After we have studied them in class, they are stapled to our WORD WALL. The children are then responsible for writing these words correctly on any piece of writing. Please help your child complete EACH DAY of tTHE WORD WALL HOMEWORK. If your child needs practice with the high frequency words, you may perform activities at home such as these:
Have your child write the words and trace them with markers
